If you've been avoiding getting your photo taken for your business, I want to tell you that you're not the exception, you're in good company. In over 25 years working in visual communications, and almost a decade working closely with camera-shy and/or neurodivergent clients, I can probably count on one hand the number of people who've attended their pre-planning session feeling completely comfortable. Most have similar concerns. What if I look awkward? What if I don't know how to pose? What if the photos just don't look like "me"?

What you don't often hear up front is that the businesses that need good photos the most are usually run by the people least comfortable being in front of a camera. That's not a coincidence, and it's definitely not unique. If you're brilliant at your job but hide at the thought of self-promotion, you're in good company.

The problem, though, is that your potential clients don't know how good you are yet, and photos can help tell that story. All they know before that first call or email is whatever they can see when looking online or by visiting you. If what they see is outdated photo, stock images, AI generated graphics, or nothing at all, they're often making a judgement about you based on what they don't know, rather than based on trust.

This is where the "just get it over with" mindset usually backfires. When you feel rushed or tense, your photos will also look rushed and tense. They won't build trust, they only tick a box. What actually works is the opposite, When you slow down the process enough that the nerves disappear (or lessen) your photos will be so much more effective, and you will be proud to use them more often.

In practice, that looks like ten minutes of relaxed conversation before a single photo is captured. It looks like being told exactly what's happening at each stage, so there's no guessing. It looks like being photographed doing something real, whatever your actual work looks like, rather than being told to just look natural, while holding a coffee cup, when you don't even drink coffee (like me).

Nothing about having professional photos should require you to become a different person on camera. Rather, it requires someone who understands that being camera-shy isn't a character flaw that you need to fix. In fact, it's just the starting point for most people, and my job as a photographer is to work with you, rather than against you.

If you've been putting off having a professional photoshoot, you're not being silly or lazy and you're not alone, you're just being human. What I know is that the photos that end up working best for my clients are always the ones I capture once my clients stop feeling like they need to perform and feel comfortable being themself, Not only does this reinforce that trust bond that is formed through working with someone who listens and does what they say they will do, it also provides you with a great business asset that will help you simplify your marketing and free up your time for those activities that earn you more money. My job as your photographer, is to help tell your story honestly and in a way that feels right for you.

If you're still on the fence about having a photoshoot, ask yourself what your current photos, or lack of them, might be quietly saying to someone who hasn't met you yet. Then get in touch when you're ready. There's no rush, and no judgement either way.
